Programme Aim
This module has been developed to provide comprehensive theory and practical knowledge to assist managers develop their managerial and leadership skills.
Learners who successfully complete this module will:
- Identify the differences between managers and leaders
- Explore the importance of management development to organisational performance
- Explore the importance of management development to national economic performance
- Acquire knowledge of theoretical concepts, models, approaches and activities associated with management development
- Develop a critical appreciation of the importance of business strategy in aligning management development approaches
- Assess the relevance of various management development models and activities to different business scenarios
- Apply knowledge of relevant models, systems and activities to specific business scenarios
- Develop self-reflective practice to enhance individual learning effectiveness
Training Content - The specific learning outcomes are grouped into 5 units.
Unit 1 - Understanding Management and Leadership
Unit 2 - Management Development and National Performance
Unit 3 - Management Development, Organisational Performance and Strategy
Unit 4 - Management Development Models
Unit 5 - Management Development Systems and Activities
Method of Assessment
Project 40% Using a case study with specific management development needs identified, the candidate will be required to identify appropriate model(s) and learning experience(s) with reference to relevant course content.
The project will require the candidate to demonstrate knowledge and application of course content and to engage in independent research. The project will be 1,500 words in length.
Examination 60% – Students will complete an examination which will account for 60% of the overall portfolio marks.
Preferred Entry Level
A learner seeking entry to this course at Level 6 does not need a previous formal qualification. Some learners may have achieved certification at Level 4 e.g. leaving certificate or FETAC Level 4 certificate, or at FETAC Level 5. Learners at Level 6 will need to be proficient at reading, drafting, preparing and understanding information. This module will include individual and team working activities, with learners taking personal responsibility for the quality of their outcome. All resources are provided as part of the programme and learners will receive supports and guidance from their tutors.
Programme Duration
The course is part-time. It will run 6 hours per week over 5 weeks. Learners need to be able to complete some work and research outside of course hours. Usually this programme requires 10 hours maximum of personal work outside the course time.
