Programme Aim

This module is designed to allow learners explore disability in an equality context and the impact of society in creating an inclusive society. In participation it explores the concept of people being disabled by society’s barriers and attitudes and the role of the individual, organisation and society in the removal of those barriers and in the changing of attitudes. The module is therefore aimed at people working in a variety of settings. This includes people working with people with disabilities and those seeking to have an understanding of equality issues.

Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • Develop a social understanding of disability
  • Demonstrate a rights-based, equality focused approach to participation in society
  • Understand the participation needs of people with different kinds of impairments
  • Be able to challenge personal and /or organisational behaviour so as to realise equality for people with disabilities to participate fully as a member or as a customer of that organisation

Training Content - The specific learning outcomes are grouped into 5 units.

Unit 1 - Historical Background and Context
Unit 2 - Disability & Society
Unit 3 - Disability & Equality/ Diversity
Unit 4 - Disability & Communication
Unit 5 - Accessibilty / positive action plans and equality/diversity proofing.

Method of Assessment

Project 60% The tutor will provide each learner with directed instructions for the project. The candidate will produce a project which will

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of disability issues
  2. Comprehensively evaluate relevant employment/equality legislation
  3. Draw conclusions on positive action measures for the future

The project will allow the candidate to analyse, evaluate and draw conclusions on a specific disability issue over a specified period of time. The process should enable candidates to explore the barriers faced by people with disabilities in society.The project may be carried out individually, or as part of a team.

Learner Record 40% – Learners will be required to record their learning experiences and show understanding both from a personal and team perspective. This learning record will account for 40% of the overall portfolio marks.

Preferred Entry Level

A learner seeking entry to this course at Level 5 does not need a previous formal qualification. Some learners may have achieved certification at Level 4 e.g. leaving certificate or FETAC Level 4 certificate, or at FETAC Level 5. This module will include individual and team working activities, with learners taking personal responsibility for the quality of their outcome. All resources are provided as part of the programme and learners will receive supports and guidance from their tutors.

Programme Duration

The course is part-time. It will run 6 hours per week over 5 weeks. Learners need to be able to complete some work and research outside of course hours. Usually this programme requires 10 hours maximum of personal work outside the course time.
