Disability Awareness FETAC Level 6 - Module Code N33018
Programme Aim
This module has been developed to enhance the knowledge and understanding of Disability by all professionals who work with people with disabilities.
Learners who successfully complete this module will:
- Obtain knowledge of the historical background to disability services and definitions of disability
- Acquire an understanding of the various theoretical models of disability
- Be aware of legal considerations associated with disability
- Be familiar with specific types of disabilities and how these can be accommodated
- Appreciate various rehabilitation and support strategies available to people with disabilities and their families
- Apply this knowledge in the workplace and in everyday life
Training Content - The specific learning outcomes are grouped into 5 units.
Unit 1 - What is disability?
Unit 2 - Living with disability
Unit 3 - Legislation, Policy and Practice
Unit 4 - Accommodating disability in Education, Training and the Workplace
Method of Assessment (Portfollio 100%)

Project 50% Tutors will provide learners with a brief that requires the learner to produce an assignment which will demonstrate an understanding and application of a range of specific learning outcomes and to apply this to a training or employment environment.
Candidates will demonstrate an understanding of:
- Disability Issues
- Living with disability
- Legislation and Policy
- Accommodating disability in Education, Training and the Workplace
Preferred Entry Level
A learner seeking entry to this course at Level 6 does not need a previous formal qualification. Some learners may have achieved certification at Level 4 e.g. leaving certificate or FETAC Level 4 certificate, or at FETAC Level 5. Learners at Level 6 will need to be proficient at reading, drafting, preparing and understanding information. This module will include individual and team working activities, with learners taking personal responsibility for the quality of their outcome. All resources are provided as part of the programme and learners will receive supports and guidance from their tutors.
Programme Duration
The course is part-time. It will run 6 hours per week over 5 weeks. Learners need to be able to complete some work and research outside of course hours. Usually this programme requires 10 hours maximum of personal work outside the course time.
